Started singing barbershop in 1982 with a chorus in South London but it wasn’t long before he was in quartet.
His quartet involvement and Gold medal tally is mightily impressive and forms a large part of British barbershop history over the past 30 years:- Quartz Precision (Gold 1989), Hooked on Harmony(Gold 1996), Light Industrial Choral Society (Gold 2002), The Works (Gold 2005) and IQ (Gold 2012). Apparently he also placed in a 10 furlong novice handicap at Kempton Park in 1986.
Between winning Gold medals, Brian supports his wonderful wife Gaynor, also a highly successful quartet singer, with her two Choruses Viva A Cappella in Kent and Steller A Cappella near their home in Suffolk.
Has been singing Barbershop since 1991 - he is married to the lovely Helen who also sings barbershop with the International finalist ladies quartet Finesse.
In 1993, Nickelodeon quartet, in the guise of the Disneyland Paris’ ‘Mainstreet Quartet’, had Stuart singing at the Magic Kingdom for nine months – a fantastic experience.
A quartet called Prime Time was formed by Stu in 2000 - after two bronze medals, the quartet won Gold in 2004. He then repeated this achievement in 2009 with Evolution, who went on to compete on the international stage twice (2010 & 2011). Now in 2017, Stuart has achieved another Gold with Portobello Road!
He is also the assistant Director and Coach of The Royal Harmonics.
Not only is Stuart the greatest of bass singers (well… the best in the quartet anyway) but also he brings the amazing ability to quote, verbatim, the entire script to the original Star Wars film ‘A New Hope’ - talent indeed
Started way back in 1982, and has sung tenor in five medal winning quartets including Gold with Cambridge Blues in 1997 and with Crossfire in 2011. Gold again in 2017 with Portobello Road is a real bonus.
There is a strong 'am-dram' influence in Ian's performance skills which he regularly passes on in his coaching of choruses and quartets around the country.
All of us in Portobello Road are members of The British Association of Barbershop Singers. Ian is proud to have been Chairman of this organisation from January 2014 to December 2016.
Ian's wonderful wife Nickie is also a coach, a quartet singer and a Performance Judge with the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS).
Ian has no formal musical training but as he says - I've listened to the Michael Crawford album A Touch of Music in the night nearly six times nearly all the way through! so who needs music?
Our very own ‘newbie’ of the group, started singing barbershop in 2003 (so not that new really) having, in his words, “never sung a note” – We all think it was a clever way for his wonderful wife, Paulette, to get a bit of peace and quiet once or twice a week
He has achieved Bronze medals with Vox in 2011 and with Fish ‘n’ Chaps in 2012.
We are very pleased to say that this year (2017) Steve achieved his dream by winning Gold with Portobello Road!
